Family Therapy

Every family goes through hard seasons. Conflict, change and stress can leave people feeling disconnected, misunderstood or stuck in the same painful patterns, even when everyone cares deeply about each other.

Family therapy brings family members together to understand what’s happening between them, improve communication, and find new ways forward. The aim isn’t to decide who’s right. It’s to help your family feel more like a team again.

When families come to us

Families reach out for many reasons, including:

  • Frequent arguments, tension or a home that feels like a battleground
  • Parents and teenagers who can’t seem to talk without it turning into conflict
  • Separation, divorce, and co-parenting across two homes
  • Blended families adjusting to new relationships and roles
  • Supporting a family member with anxiety, depression, neurodivergence or other challenges
  • Grief, illness or a major life change affecting everyone
  • Sibling conflict
  • Adult children and parents working through long-standing hurt

Families come in every shape. Whoever you consider family is welcome.

Our approach

We see a family as a system, where everyone affects everyone else. When one person is struggling, it ripples through the whole family, and patterns can build up that no single person chose or can fix alone. So rather than focusing on one “problem” person, we look at what’s happening between you.

Our role is to create a safe, balanced space where every voice is heard, including the quieter ones. We help family members slow down, listen to each other, understand the needs behind the behaviour, and practise new ways of communicating and resolving conflict.

We work in a way that’s inclusive of all family structures, cultures and identities, and that’s affirming of neurodivergent family members.

What to expect

We usually start with an initial session, often with parents or the adults involved, to understand your family’s story, your concerns and your hopes for therapy. Together we’ll decide who should attend future sessions. That might be the whole family, or different combinations of people at different times, including some individual sessions.

Sessions are structured enough to feel safe and flexible enough to follow what matters most that day. Between sessions, we may suggest small things to try at home.

A note on safety. If there is ongoing family violence or someone feels unsafe at home, joint sessions may not be the right starting point. We’ll talk with you privately about the safest way to get support.

Common questions

Does everyone in the family need to come? Not necessarily. It helps to have the people most involved in the situation, but change can still happen if someone isn’t ready to attend. We’ll work with whoever is able to come.

Will the therapist take sides? No. Our job is to understand everyone’s perspective and support the family as a whole, not to judge or assign blame.

What ages do you see? We work with families with children and teenagers, as well as adult family members. Younger children may join for part of a session, with activities suited to their age.

How is this different from individual therapy for my child? Individual therapy focuses on one person’s inner world. Family therapy focuses on relationships and patterns between people. Sometimes the two work best together, and we can talk through which fits your situation.
